Typographic Concert Poster

The Project

To practice using type to convey emotion and personality, I designed a typographic concert poster (left) for one of my favorite music groups, an eccentric Japanese indie rock/pop band. Their music is a bold, loud, funky, and quirky blend of pop and rock, sometimes interwoven with small excerpts of classical music. To really ensure that a creative use of type was a focal point of the design, I worked within several restrictions: I could only use type (no images), which had to be in the Akzidenz Grotesque typeface, and at most two colors other than white.

Typography + Color

The goal of the poster was to be able to represent the feeling of the band's work through the use of color and especially type. I therefore chose a bold color combination of loud hot pink, black, and white--which also referenced the color palette of their Watashi Igai Watashi Ja Nai No album cover (right)--and arranged the text so that it would be somewhat chaotic, with letters hanging off one another, falling, tilting out of place, and overlapping. It is meant to represent an organized chaos, much like their music, which intentionally breaks rules and takes unexpected turns.
